I watched this on DVD very recently and had no idea that it would be such a gem.

I've read a lot of Stephen King books but this totally took me by surprise. I would not have pegged it as a King story at all.

The story is told through the eyes of Morgan Freeman's character Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding – about his friendship with Andrew "Andy" Dufresne and their life at the Shawshank State Prison.

Tim Robbins gives a convincing portrayal of a man wrongfully accused of murdering his wife (and her lover) but reluctantly accepting his fate in the Shawshank. Only to be pushed over the edge and finally claim his right to freedom when an inmate friend who has knowledge of his innocence gets killed.

It is such a great tale of how one person can overcome overwhelming odds just with the power of hope.
