Nowadays, it's become a necessity to know what's showing in the movies before shelling out your hard-earned cash. And it's even more important that you don't end up exiting the cinema with your kids - feeling let down.
A lot of rating systems do not really give much thought on how the movie affects the family, especially children. Most movie rating systems only offer basic information on what is to be expected in the movie. They don't really give any insight on any values that can be learned or any bad habits/doings that should be avoided.
Any worries that we have (especially as parents/guardians) about language, drug use, violence and sex should be given proper notice. These issues are rampant in a lot of the recent movies and due diligence in assessing these movies to be deemed appropriate for our family to view is crucial – which is why family movie reviews can be quite valuable.
We cannot rely solely on the ratings given as General Patronage, Parental Guidance, etc. Although you may not see anything overtly offensive in a movie, there may still be a lot of suggestive language or imagery injected in these movies. And though, there may be several General Patronage movies out there, only very few really have good values to share.
Just because a movie is rated as General Patronage, doesn't necessarily mean that you should go out and take your 5 year old to watch it with you. Guardians and parents alike should be a little bit more discerning when it comes to the actual content of these GP movies. Do these movies impart good values? Will there be good lessons learned when you finish watching it? Will kids and adults feel good when they walk out the theater? Will it be a movie that you and your kid can connect with and talk about later?
